A Post Olympic Look at China and Wal-Mart: Product Safety
This is the second entry in a series of posts looking at China as it relates to Wal-Mart in the aftermath of the Olympic games. Today, we'll take a look at product safety. Wal-Mart's business model is based on low prices. That means both how much they pay for a product, and how much they sell a product for. In the first post in this series, we looked at how this frenzied urge to reduce labor costs drove manufacturing to China. Today, we look at how Wal-Mart, based on the same desire for chea

Column - Sick of the scare
I STAGGERED into my local hospital’s emergency department last Thursday and found out just how sick the global warming alarmists really are. Not a single bed to be had. Not there, or anywhere close, either, I was told. No, I’m not saying the beds were every filled with people sick with “climate change delusion”—described by the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry as a condition that gives victims “visions of apocalyptic events”, that leaves them too scared to drink a glass of wa

Comments on Janette Sadik-Khan
She is the transportation commissioner in NYC. The New York Observer ran a little story, "Bloomberg’s road Fighter: The relatively radical Janette Sadik-Khan has championed bike lanes and pedestrian plazas—but does the transportation commish move too quick?," on her. Here are a couple of nice comments to the story that express very well the sentiments I try to express (not as well sometimes) about the difference between the middle city, and Washington specifically, and suburbs. Today is the anniversary of MLK’s Dream Speech
August 28, 1963 - Martin Luther King, Jr. I am glad to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation. Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of wish to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of cap

What this is really all about
A little something I wrote last night. Cheers, M Dear Rachel and Charlie, As I write this, you're both upstairs, sound asleep in your cribs. Your mom has gone off to bed too. Just me here, awake on a school night with some things on my mind. I'm thinking about this country we live in. What an imperfect place it is! For instance, we sometimes start wars we shouldn't, many of our leaders are corrupt we now have this vast chasm between a few wealthy people and everybody else. Here in M

Walking Past a Train With a Camera Is 'Suspicious'
Walking Past a Train With a Camera Is 'Suspicious' By TChris, Section Civil Liberties Posted on Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 03:28:15 PM EST Tags: (every tags) Share This: Digg! Well, that explains it. It seems that the seizure of video recording equipment from reporters who traveled to the Twin Cities to keep an eye on police interactions with protesters was just an exercise in homeland security. Minneapolis police spokesman Bill Palmer said the incident happened at 1:40 a.m. and that the

Ecuador - Loja - Loja, Ecuador
Jump to the full entry & travel map Loja, Ecuador I had been holding high hopes for Ecuador during my last days in Peru. Ecuador has for a long time seemed a rather majestic and forgotten about place. Tucked in between the drug lords of Columbia and the great tourist mecca of Peru, is has been rendered dwarf. In a continent of Brazils, Argentinas and the politics of Venuezula, Ecuador seems to strugle to post a blip on the heart monitor of the patient down the hall.... though when i

Group Fun!
On Sunday after Hannah finished her St. Paul errands we headed back out to Spicer to rendez vous with Gerry and a few friends who had arrive out from the Twin Cities. As much fun as the home was when it was just the 5 of us, it was so much MORE fun with others with which to share the lake! We swam - they swam and I watched - and fished - and swam - and kayaked - and swam. What a lovely day! Then we had a wonderful dinner and sat outside, around a flame, watching the lake grow dim. When the s

WAR IN THE U.S.!!I.V.A.W. BRINGS THE WAR HOME
The anti-war association Iraq Veterans Against the War has been staging guerrilla theatre warfare in cities every over the U.S. for the past year. They call it Operation First Casualty…and they most recently brought the battle to the streets of Denver, CO, where the Democratic National Convention is meeting this week. This video is of one of their earlier operations in Chicago, but it shows the odd juxtaposition of everyday American life in “wartime” with the everyday life of Iraqis in wa

The Real Cost of McCain's "Emergency Rooms=Insurance" Plan
(Cross posted at Daily Kos) I don't think enough can be said about the sheer boneheadedness, arrogance, and, yes, elitism of this statement from McCain advisor, John Goodman. But the numbers are misleading, said John Goodman, president of the National middle for Policy Analysis, a right-leaning Dallas-based think tank. Mr. Goodman, who helped craft Sen. John McCain's health care policy, said anyone with access to an emergency room effectively has insurance, albeit the government acts as the pa
